4. Seltene Japanische Pressungen

_______________________________________________________________

Japanese Rarerities,LP Pressings, Cd’s, “OBI’s”, etc.

The country with the most jazz lovers is certainly Japan.

Short after World War II jazz blossomed here like nowhere else in the world, and when the famous Jazz at the Philharmonic group, with artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young, etc., etc. visited Japan for the first time in 1953, to the surprise of the artist their welcome was like heroes, complete with "ticker tape parade” in Tokyo a countless people to watch.

During the late 60ths Japanese records, with strange paper sleeves were brought to Europe by pilots, stewards and others who visited Japan frequently. These records were often completely out of print elsewhere, and stores that sold these records, had often just one copy to offer.

Although these records had prices twice as much a European or US pressing, jazz lovers knew that these records were not only rare, but sounded better too.
Beside that there came Japanese pressings that were not available elsewhere, and were exclusively made for Japan. Stores that soon imported Japanese records, often only sold them to their best customers, almost secretly, and were gone the moment they arrived.

Japanese vinyl releases are standard high quality pressings, much sought after by audiophiles and collectors. The vinyl feels and sounds better, the sleeves are printed on better quality stock paper and often include Japanese inserts to translate the liner notes, but vocal records include often lyric inserts, both in English and Japanese.
New, all Japanese LP’s are issued with an "obi” – literally translated this means "sash” and is derived from the obi or stash that women wear around the traditional kimono dress.

The "obi” is a delicate paper strip, usually wrapped around the left side of the album cover, but there are also "obi’s” found on other place on or around the sleeve.
These "obi‘s” contain information in Japanese about the record, because the original sleeve in English is used, and are all printed in Japanese kanji and – kana scripts.
Obi designs can be as varied as the LP’s they adorn, and some series of obi designs can be as collectable as the albums they decorate.

Very rare are LP’s with "double obis”, most the usual + a smaller one, indicating that this record is a promotional one.

On many Japanese import LP’s the delicate "obi” is gone, while also the Japanese insert is lost. This is often the case with second-hand LP’s, so check out the condition of the vinyl before you buy these LP’s. Second-hand Japanese LP’s sound often very good. Also the Japanese insert can be missing, because the Japanese translation is printed on the backside. Certainly when you find Japanese characters on the labels of the vinyl, you can be certain that this is Japanese-only release.

Obi’s can also be found on or around CD’s, including booklets in Japanese along the original liner notes. Nowadays "obi’s” also appear as stickers in various places on sleeves of LP’s and CD’s.

A Japanese record or CD has usual a higher value, even if they have no insert(s) or "obi”. But with an insert the value is higher, and complete with "obi” even higher.

Depending on the year of pressing, the "obi’s” are different, so insiders can tell if this is a first, a second or even a third Japanese pressing of a record.

Be certain that you buy a real Japanese LP, with genuine insert and "obi”. At the moment some European sellers bring LP’s on the marketplace with "look-a-like” obi’s.
Genuine mint condition Japanese records, complete with insert(s) and obi, are becoming rarer. So these records are not only an exclusive addition to your collection, but also a good investment.

*Interessante Ergänzung zum o. g. Soloauftritt Petersons im Blue Note Tokyo 4/89

Ab dem 17.4.89 waren Auftritte des "Triple Treat Trio" (M. Alexander/R. Brown/H.
